According
to Islamic belief, during Al-Husher (The Gathering), a stage
that comes after resurrection and before the judgment, the
Sun will be brought near to the Earth1.
Astronomers are predicting that when our Sun fuses the
last of its hydrogen into helium and grows into a Red
Giant, in about 4-5 billion years, it will swallow
Mercury, Venus and the Moon and get very close to the
Earth. There is disagreement about
whether the Earth will be engulfed or not. The outer
planets will escape to a wider orbit and could
eventually drift into space. As the Sun increases
in size its luminosity increases and its surface temperature
decreases. The extreme heat of the
expanding approaching luminous Sun will evaporate
the Earth’s oceans and destroy its
atmosphere, eventually turning Earth into a hellish planet of
